Martin Dawe

Martin Dawe is a sculptor who works primarily as a commissioned artist in a variety of mediums.  Martin has become well known for his figurative and representational work, which ranges from loose, impressionist work to traditional sculptures with a late 19th century style. From the World Athletes Monument in Midtown Atlanta to his contemporary site installations, Martin has developed a very personal style of collaboration from his work with private, public and corporate clients.

Martin was born in Johannesburg, . He moved to the when he was a child and grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey , ten miles from Manhattan . He studied at Boston University School of Fine Arts and received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Georgia State University . He apprenticed for 8 years under Julian Harris , a distinguished sculptor, medallist and Georgia Tech professor emeritus of architecture, who taught architecture at Georgia Tech for over 30 years.

Martin designed and sculpted the bronze circle of Atlases, called the World Athletes Monument, located at Peachtree Street and West Peachtree Street. Other public art commissions include a commemorative monolith with 43 figures in relief that also serves as a noon mark sundial for the international headquarters of Eastman, two 16’ figures in relief composed of "jigsaw-esque" panels filled with imagery, symbols and words for the 60-foot atrium of Fulton County’s new Judge Romae T. Powell Juvenile Justice Center commissioned by the Fulton County Arts Council, six replicas of bas relief sculptures from the East Room of the White House to be placed in a Presidential Library and a bronze figure for one of the Carter Presidential Library gardens.
 
Martin has been teaching figurative sculpture for over 18 years. He teaches regularly at Clayton State University Portfolio Center and offers quarterly classes at CherryLion for a committed following. He has also taught continuing education classes at Spruill Hill Center for the Arts and Atlanta College of Art.
